Search for Resistance to Two Colletotrichum spp . in Pepper (Capsicum spp .)
Kwon T. J.

Abstract
A total of 106 lines of pepper consisting of introductions from USDA and Korean local cultivars were evaluated for resistance to two anthracnose fungi, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and C. dematium.
Green and red ripe fruits were set in plastic humidity boxes (23 ¡¿ 15 ¡¿ 7.5 cm) in the laboratory. An inoculation pin (a plastic column of 4.5mm in diameter with a fine needle protruding about 1mm) was dipped in a conidial suspension of the pathogens. The fruits in the humidity boxes were pricked at the middle point of the pods with the inoculation pin holding the conidial suspensions, leaving a small hole with a drop of the suspension. The number of diseased fruits was counted and the lesion diameters on the diseased fruits were measured on 5, 9, and 13 days after inoculation for evaluation of the resistance.
Lesion expansion by C, gloeosporioides was slower on the fruits of PI201232, PI123469, PI201234, and `Gosung¢¥, which are also known to be resistant to Phytophthora capsici, than on the other lines. However, none of the lines showed such a high level of resistance that lesion and acervuli development is prevented. PI 224433, `Chungryong¢¥, and PI 123469 were resistant to C. dematium so that lesion and acervuli development was prevented or inhibited.
